A lot of it depends on the color you plan to paint the wall. If you are going to paint it with a light colored paint, usually one coat of primer and two of finish paint will do. If it's a darker color, you should have the primer tinted - otherwise you'll need three or four coats of paint to cover properly. With tinted primer you'll still probably need two coats of finish paint, but it will look right. How many coats of primer and paint of color do I need for brand new drywall?
well to honest i dont know.

i just sanded down a chest of drawers just enought to take the varnish off and put 1 coat of primer and 2 od over coat. but i had run out of primer for the one side and after the same amount of coats it looks exactly the same.

i would say about 2 thin coats of primer and 3 thin coats of overcoatsw

for a quility finish
One coat of primer with one coat of paint should suffice. When we drywalled our basement, that was enough. We did buy good quality paint, no walmart stuff..
