What is the best way to remove tile thin set from drywall so the wall can be painted.?

i live in a house that was built in the 50's and it had some very ugly tile on the bathroom wall that was at chair rail height. i have removed all the old tile but am left with the thin set on the wall. is there a simple way to remove this. i have tried scraping the wall but it doesnt remove the ridges completely. and i tried a mesh screen to try and sand the wall but it is VERY slow going. could i use a power sander? What is the best way to remove tile thin set from drywall so the wall can be painted.?
I would recommend removing the drywall entirely and replacing it with new drywall. It would probably be less work than what you're doing now. You could use a sander but it will be a big mess (wear a mask if you do it) and will likely damage the drywall requiring repair anyway and your wall will and up looking like crap. Demo the existing drywall and you'll have a new smooth wall by tomorrow night. What is the best way to remove tile thin set from drywall so the wall can be painted.?
Using a power sander will be very dusty,You will need to block the room off from the rest of your house and open the window--Also use a dust mask. It's the only way I know of other than to chisel off %26amp; reskim the plaster.
