Paint over improperly prepped wallpaper/drywall?

Previous owner put up wallpaper without prepping the drywall. Now, the glue has mixed with the paper layer of the drywall. We removed the wallpaper to paint. Is there a best way to remove the glue without destroying the drywall so we can paint? Help!Paint over improperly prepped wallpaper/drywall?
The easiest, though the least cost effective would be to replace the drywall.

A 50% vinegar solution (1 part white vinegar, 1 part water) would soften the glue which can then be gently scraped off with a putty knife. If you're careful you shouldn't damage the drywall. You can also buy solutions from your local paint/hardware store that work well. Before painting thoroughly sand all surfaces, wipe down the walls, and use a good primer, like KILLZ.Paint over improperly prepped wallpaper/drywall?
It is possible to paint over it - though I wouldn't recommend it. you have to spackle and sand all seams, prime and paint. You might be able to find someone who specializes in removal, in the long run it's worth it.
i would talk to a paint store for advice. i would also suggest that you prime the walls before you paint. if you do this step you might be able to seal the walls with an oil based primer. then put the paint you want over it. you still might have to sand the walls first though. good luck.
