How do you paint raw drywall without plastering it?

do u put a primer on or can u just paint it? but then will the paint soak into the drywall? also how long does it take a primer paint to dry?How do you paint raw drywall without plastering it?
You need to do the joints and the nail heads with joint compound or your nails will easily rust if you use latex paint. The rust will come out thru your paint.

Once the joint compound is dry and sanded properly, simply apply one coat of drywall PRIMER before painting to avoid raising the nap on new drywall. It only takes 1 hour to dry and it will get the job done right.

After you finish mudding and sanding, prime it with drywall primer. It's cheaper than regular primer and does a good job sealing the wall. If you paint without priming, the finish will soak into the wall and all of the tape joints will ';flash';. The primer will dry and be ready for finish paint in about 2-3 hours if you're in a hurry, but it's best to let it dry overnight before you paint. Hope this helps.
you have to fix all of the nail holes and the seems first with drywall compound.

you do have to prime the dry wall first
