Why would paint peel off ceiling down to drywall? Curls & kind of strips?

I'm looking for all possible reasons. My place is old around 1972.Why would paint peel off ceiling down to drywall? Curls %26amp; kind of strips?
it's possible that the sheetrock was never primed when the house was built. or someone didn't prime it before they painted with latex and the latex paint is pulling the base coat off. when a wall or ceiling or the outside of a house for that matter, isn't primered before painting, latex paint can shrink and in so doing pull layers of paint underneath it right off of what it was painted over. if you ever left paint in a rolling pan and didn't wash it out, when the paint dries, it forms a skin that will eventually pull away from the pan in a sheet. another possibility is that the ceiling was dirty and wasn't washed and rinsed before a paint job. my house is about 40 years older than yours, and has many more coats of paint on all the surfaces, and i have the same problems outside and inside. all that you can do is fix or repair each one as you find it's cause. a word of caution about the paint in your house; since it was built before 1978, it could have lead paint in it. if you have young children, a wife that is or will be pregnant, be careful to do the repair work safely. creating a lead paint dust storm will be very expensive to clean up, and the health problems would be a real nightmare. ask at a paint store how to determine if you are dealing with lead paint. good luck, hope this helps. Why would paint peel off ceiling down to drywall?
