Why do they always paint white stripes and spots on drywall?

I've wondered that for years. Whenever you see drywall put up, there are those stripes and dots. Oddly I never see it being done.;-)Why do they always paint white stripes and spots on drywall?
Its commonly referred to as ';drywall mud';. A compound used to hide the dimples made by screws and seams in the drywall. It looks like a white paste and is applied wet. Soon after it dries, it is then sanded smooth and ready for primer and paint! So its not actually paint, just a means to make the pieces of drywall look seamless after paint!

Hope you feel informed. Why do they always paint white stripes and spots on drywall?
to cover up the nails/screws/and other stuff that holds the walls together
Those white stripes are the bonding that holds the wall parts together and the white spots are to cover the nail holes. It makes the wall smooth so that it is better to paint over.
That is not paint, it's mud and tape to fill in the gaps to smooth the wall.
YOUR FUNNY!! AND INNOCENT!!
To seal the seams and cover the nails.
It's the joint compound to cover screw holes and seams.
The white strips are covering connecting pieces of drywall which are taped over with masking tape. The spots cover drywall screws which hold the drywall to the frame. also the paint is actually drywall ';mud.';
The process is called ';tape and bed';. The seams of the drywall are coved in joint compound and then a piece of paper drywall tape. The dimples from nails or screws used to install the sheetrock are covered with a dab of joint compound (no tape needed). The next step is to ';skim coat'; the seams, it can also be called ';floating it out'; this hides imperfections. These seams are then sanded and a method of texturing is used prior to paint.

Hope this helps
It's the plaster to give the wall a smooth look. Without it you would see each individual sheet of drywall and every nail put into it.
Isn't that drywall mud covering spots and lines
Actually it's not paint. If you look closely, you'll notice it's drywall compound. They place what is called drywall tape on the seams and mud (drywall compound) over it. Then the same mud is used to smooth over the nail and/or screw holes.

Wow! Lotsa handy women on Yahoo Answers! I want one.
Well the stripes are covering the joints where they were butted up to each other, filled with joint compound, drywall tape on top , and more compound, then sanded. the spots cover the nails.
Almost every answer is right (to some degree or another) That must be a record too!!!

P.S. Hannah - before you call others dumb you ought to a) learn how to spell, and b) make sure you have at least some idea of what you're taking about.

P.P.S. gator_ce - It's NOT masking tape, it's DRYWALL tape!
It's the patching to make everything smooth in preparation for painting or wallcovering.
ur dumb they paint it white because when you paint it another color the paint wont show or change the color of the paint you choose duhhhhhhh
